Our Business

Dougherty Gardens, Inc. began as a plant stand in 1962. My grandmother started this to sell chrysanthemums that she grew in a small greenhouse. Eventually, my father went to school for ornamental horticulture at Delaware Valley College. After graduation he tried his hand at wholesale growing, and managing a nursery in Pennsylvania. While my father tried these other occupations, my grandfather built more greenhouses and a small store. In 1978, my father came back to Franklinville to take over the business. I grew up working with my mother and father at the garden center, and began working there full time in 1989. The pond shop, which is now Dougherty's Water Creations, began as a small corner of the store, and grew into its own 1,200 sq. ft. building. We joined a buying co-op, ServiStar, in 1993, which later merged with TruValue and became TruServ. This large lawn and garden co-op, allows us greater buying power and this in turn affords us the ability to transfer savings back to you, the customer.
